So sad to know Darwina is no longer here on Earth with us, but let us smile in the assurance that her bright presence is making Heaven an even more remarkable place to be today. I was a colleague at the Park Service, even trusted enough to water her plants when she was out of town – an honor that truly terrified me. I may have had more than one grumble to myself after she would return a draft document to me, my hard-worked pages fairly bleeding from her famous red-pen edits, but I appreciated that she did not pull her punches. And I was in good company – Darwina wasn’t about to let anybody, at any level, step into trouble if she saw a word or detail she thought was not quite right. Darwina and I both had much-loved pets, her cat, my dog, and when my “baby” had aged to his “elder” years and had the same health issues which had already taken her sweet pet from her, Darwina gave me the books she had relied on to care for hers. I know her work in landscape architecture and for the protection of cultural resources is nearly legendary, but I will remember her as someone who was the friend we'd like to be and the friend we were glad to have. May God bless you, Darwina. – Nancy Young, NPS Class of 2012.
